Just above Appelscha you drive through the Fochteloerveen, a unique and beautiful nature reserve. Get on the saddle and come here to enjoy the views and the silence.
Kanaal Across the es you drive to the beautiful Trefkerk from 1903. At the church is a belfry, the clock of which dates from 1435. Then you cycle along the vast meadows. At junction 79 you cross the leafy Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart, a canal from 1630. You do this via the Fochteloerverlaat, a lock from 1895. The associated house is a national monument.
Veenhuizen The Fochteloerveen is one of the best preserved raised moor areas in the Netherlands. The fact that this area has preserved its old character is mainly due to chance: the nature reserve is relatively isolated on the border of Drenthe and Friesland. You will experience a wonderfully refreshing silence here. In Veenhuizen you see many monumental buildings, such as the domed church from 1826. You can also visit the Prison Museum here. Then you drive through the Fochteloerveen one more time. To enjoy!
