Walking along the Hollandse IJssel

This walking route takes you along the dike along the Hollandse IJssel. You also walk through a piece of Oudewater.

Dutch IJssel
Soon you walk onto the Waardsedijk, a car-free road along the Hollandse IJssel. You look out on grassy and flowery polders, straight ditches and pollard willows. Occasionally you see an old farmhouse. As the road approaches the river a little closer, you look out over the rippling water. You can get a breath of fresh air and relax here.

Oldwater
Along the river you walk a bit into Oudewater, the oldest town in the Green Heart. You will find a characteristic Dutch atmosphere here. Especially if you cross the Hollandse IJssel via the monumental drawbridge from 1760. In the hamlet of Willeskop you can still see some old farms. You will also pass Gemaal De Pleyt, which pumps water up from the Lopikerwaard to the Hollandse IJssel.
