Spaarndam-West is a village that is perfect for a walk. In the area you walk along polders and waterways.
Kolk lock
You will see many monumental buildings, some dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries! The most special is the Kolksluis from 1280 that you see here: it is the oldest working lock in Europe! Further on you pass the Oude Kerk from 1627.
Spaarne
In the countryside you can walk to the Fort north of Spaardam. This fort, built at the end of the nineteenth century, is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. On the right you look out over Zijkanaal B with its many houseboats. A little later you walk along the Westbroekplas, a beautiful recreational area. A footpath leads you through the meadows in the polder. You see reed collars here, but also many bunkers. The last part of the route runs along the banks of the Spaarne.
