Description

If you take a look at the height profile of the Maren-Moselle cycle path, you may be surprised: starting in Daun in the GesundLand Vulkaneifel, it goes uphill? Correct. But only four kilometers. During the remaining 53 kilometers you go slightly downhill almost all the time. It soon becomes clear what it means to be on the road on a former railway line: viaducts lead over deep valleys, countless bridges make comfortable cycling possible, here and there railway crossings and railway grounds bear witness to the former railway line. A total of four partly illuminated tunnels indicate the direction of travel. The'Große Schlitzohr\\\' is 560 meters long – when you enter the tunnel, the end is only recognizable as a faint point of light.

The former railway dam, over which large and small cyclists now cycle enthusiastically, runs along extensive meadow landscapes or wonderfully in the shade through the woods. You only brake at one of the countless picnic spots, for a short trip to playgrounds and places of interest in the immediate vicinity of the path or on marked special cycle routes that rejoin the cycle path. The Schalkenmehrener Maar, for example, one of the three maars near Daun, is only a stone's throw from the cycle path. The castles of Manderscheid, on the other hand, can be reached via one of the ring roads. The section between Daun and Gillenfeld is particularly geared towards smaller cyclists. Sometimes left, then right again of the river, the cycle path follows the valley of the Lieser to the Moselle with Bernkastel-Kues as its final destination. If you want to get back to Daun, either take on the challenge of a climb of about 400 meters or simply get on the Regio-Radler bus MaareMosel 300.

Characteristic
Flat, continuous asphalted route on a former railway line (Daun-Lieser) with gradients of 2.5 percent on average; occasionally on streets with little traffic, therefore very suitable for families with children / inline skaters.

Highlights
Two viaducts, four tunnels
Tip
you can return to the starting point with the MaareMosel bicycle bus , which runs between Daun, Wittlich and Bernkastel-Kues.
