Melle, Flanders, Belgium
Cycling route: 773814
Provided by: Plan Bier
This route takes you through some beautiful towns just south of Ghent. You cycle many kilometers on the dike along the Scheldt. In passing you will learn more about the history of this area during the First World War.
Zeppelin
The route starts at the former Gontrode airport. This airfield was built by the Germans in 1914-1915 with the intention of bombing London via zeppelins. In 1917, bombers also took off from this airport. Two bunkers are now the silent witnesses to this story. You can read more about it on an information board. On the Scheldt you will pass the Liedemeerspark, and further on on a peninsula lies the Ghent Keizerspark, a green oasis.
Melle station
The Scheldt used to be a wide meandering river. It regularly overflowed its banks and thus naturally fertilized the surrounding land. Just past Ghent you can still see some of these old overflow areas, they are still in use as flowery meadows and fields. You will also pass the Kalverbos, a closed nature reserve. In Melle you can admire the station building from 1853, which is the oldest brick station in Belgium.
