Along dikes and forests - battle in Scheldeland

Around Dendermonde you can take a cycling tour through the beautiful Scheldeland. A region where a fierce battle raged during the First World War: you can learn more about it from the information boards along the route.

Scheldt
The route starts in Zele, where you can see the baroque St. Ludgerus Church on the Markt. Then you drive a few kilometers over the dikes along the Scheldt. It is wonderfully peaceful here to cycle along the rippling water and meadows. As peaceful as the landscape now looks, the fighting was fierce here during WWI. Via Oudegem you cross to the Dender. After a while you see how this river flows into the Scheldt.

Buggenhoutbos
You can enjoy a terrace in picturesque Dendermonde. Here you will see, among other things, the town hall with its centuries-old belfry. You drive through the Buggenhoutbos, a beautiful deciduous forest whose history dates back to the twelfth century. In September 1914, the Belgian army fought a fierce battle against the occupying forces here. The Germans destroyed half the forest. You then drive many kilometers along the Scheldt, passing the Grembergen Broek nature reserve. To enjoy!
