Description
Zwolle is the ideal environment for a varied cycling tour. This route takes you through the historic city center of Zwolle, but also through some beautiful nature reserves just outside the city. There is a lot of greenery on this route, but also plenty of water. Zwolle is located at a crossroads of waterways.
Forests and city park De Wezenlanden
From the Westerveldese Bos, a young forest on the banks of the Zwarte Water, the centuries-old hamlet of Langenholte and the forest on the Agnietenberg, a river dune from the Ice Age, you drive towards the Wezenlanden city park on the Almelose Canal. Until the early 1930s, this piece of land was swampy because it was under the influence of the tidal forces in the Zuiderzee. The first construction took place in this area in 1950.
City Park The English Work
The English Work is located west of Zwolle. This is a large city park that was built around 1830 on former fortifications. The park is designed according to the romantic English landscape style, which is why it owes its name. It is located directly on the dike of the IJssel river. It has been expanded over the years with, among other things, a large pond. Not only is it a beautiful area for walking or cycling, but the park is also used for the extraction of groundwater. A number of pump wells have been installed in the park for this purpose.
This route is one of the 31 selected routes for the May Cycling Month 2016. The May Cycling Month has been a major event for recreational cyclists for years.
