Description
Zwolle is the ideal environment for a varied bike ride. This route takes you through the historic city center of Zwolle, but also through some beautiful nature reserves just outside the city. There is a lot of greenery to be found on this route, but also enough water. Zwolle is located at a crossroads of waterways.
Forests and city park De Wezenlanden
From the Westerveldese Bos, a young forest on the banks of the Zwarte Water, the centuries-old hamlet of Langenholte and the forest on the Agnietenberg, a river dune from the ice age, you drive towards the city park de Wezenlanden on the Almelose Kanaal. Until the early thirties, this piece of land was marshy, because it was influenced by the tidal action in the Zuiderzee. In 1950, construction started in this area for the first time.
City park The English Work
To the west of Zwolle lies Het Engelse Werk. This is a large city park that was built around 1830 on former fortifications. The park is designed according to the romantic English landscape style and that is where it gets its name from. It is located directly on the dike of the river IJssel. It has been expanded over the years with, among other things, a large pond. It is not only a beautiful area for walking or cycling, but the park is also used for the extraction of groundwater. A number of pumping wells have been placed in the park for this purpose.
This route is one of the 31 selected routes for the May Cycling Month 2016. The May Cycling Month has been a major event for recreational cyclists for many years.
