In need of a nice, quiet day of cycling along car-free roads? Then come to the Flemish Meetjesland. And enjoy nature to the fullest.
Kaprijke
Quite soon after setting off, you pass the Huysmanhoeve Provincial Regional Centre. The entire estate is designated a protected village landscape; only the gatehouse remains of the medieval farmhouse. You can stop here for a drink before cycling to picturesque Kaprijke. You will see many old buildings here, such as the Baroque town hall from 1663. From junction 13, you cycle a short distance along De Lieve. It was constructed in the thirteenth century and is considered the oldest canal in Flanders.
Eeklo
The beautiful village centre of Zomergem also breathes history. Here you can see, among other things, the striking town hall. In the rural Meetjesland, you drive through a succession of meadows, fields, and streams. You regularly pass old farmhouses and chapels. You also pass through several nature reserves, such as the Keigatbos. Here, you drive mainly among fragrant pine trees. After the forests of Provincial Domain Het Leen, the old centre of Eeklo awaits you: enjoy the history and a drink on a terrace!
