To better protect villages and towns against high water levels in the IJssel, the IJsselweide contractor combination has constructed an eight-kilometre-long high-water channel between Veessen and Wapenveld. The contractor did this on behalf of the Vallei en Veluwe Water Board. The channel was not dug but was created by the construction of two new dikes. The mutual width varies from 550 to 1500 meters. The high-water channel is part of the national Room for the River programme.
At extremely high water (5.65 m +NAP) the channel causes a water level drop of 71 cm in the IJssel near Veessen. This is expected to happen on average once in a lifetime.
In the south near Veessen, an inlet has been built with a valve construction that is lowered at extremely high water. This inlet consists of a dike with valves. A kind of threshold. When the valves are lowered, the channel is activated and the water flows into the area. This allows the IJsselwater to be drained more quickly and prevents flooding of villages and towns.
On the IJsseldijk you come to the inlet and the bridge over the Kerkdijk. From the Kerkdijk, the IJsseldijk has been excavated over a length of 800 meters to just before the nature farm at the Nijensteen. The bridge with inlet work (total length 800 meters) has 60 pillars and valves. Each valve is 1.05 meters high and 12.5 meters long.
In the north near Wapenveld, an outlet has been created that consists of a low dike with an outlet. When the water in the IJssel has dropped again, the outlet is opened on the other side of the high-water channel. This is a'floodgate\\\' in the dike.
For safety reasons, no homes or businesses are allowed in the channel. The agricultural function of the area has been preserved.
Finally, the high water channel was constructed for the safety of the people living along the IJssel river basin. Many people in this area have had to make sacrifices for this. A total of nine companies and five homes had to be moved. It is good to reflect on this too. But also think about your own safety and that of your fellow road users along the way. Only stop where this is possible and take other traffic into account.
