Zwolle'Thinking of Holland I see broad rivers flowing slowly through endless lowlands\\\', Hendrik Marsman wrote during one of his foreign trips. We do not know whether he thought of the IJssel when he wrote his poem, but it could well be. For a large part of this route you have this border river in view, meandering through the landscape between Overijssel and Gelderland. The route also takes you past Hattem, where time seems to have stood still in the historic centre. It is no wonder that a number of museums can be found here, including the Voerman Museum Hattem.
Dike gate
The Dijkpoort is a 14th-century city gate in the Dutch town of Hattem.
In 1908 the gate tower was restored, with the architect PJH Cuypers adding a battlement, hood and corner towers. This was modelled on other city gates. These additions are recognisable by a different type of stone.
The Fortune
The windmill De Fortuin is located at Molenbelt 7 in Hattem. The tower mill was built in 1816 as a replacement for an earlier mill that had blown over in 1808. In 1852, the mill was given a stone substructure.
The Diligence
De Vlijt is a corn mill located on the Grote Weg in Wapenveld.
The mill was built in 1879 and was completely rebuilt in 1984, after a fire in 1980. It is an octagonal pine, thatched mill, a so-called ground sailor, with a span of 23.50 meters.
The landscape value of the mill is great but is somewhat limited by relatively high vegetation in the nearby area.
The associated miller's house, barn and haystack are municipal monuments.
High water channel Veessen - Wapenveld
The Veessen-Wapenveld flood channel ensures a water level drop of 71 centimetres on the IJssel during extremely high water, thus preventing flooding of the villages and towns along the IJssel. It is one of the projects of the national water safety programme Room for the River.
Church Vorchten
In the centre of the village of Vorchten stands an old village church.
The tower was built around 1200 and is covered with tuff.
In the tower hangs a bell from 1641, cast by Hendryck ter Horst from Deventer.
The oldest part of the church dates from before the year 900 and is made of tuff, so not yet of brick. It also stands on a mound and therefore dates from before the diking. The church is a more than eleven hundred year old, still existing and functioning church.
