Description

Three beautiful areas of Utrecht Landscape are located on the edge of De Bilt: the Beerschoten estate, the Houdringe estate and the Panbos. Together they form a contiguous nature reserve of 367 hectares. Park forest, drifting dunes, meadows with groups of trees and old avenues alternate. You will find four marked hiking trails: red (4.5 km), white (3.5 km), yellow (12 km) and blue (3.5 km)
This walk goes over the Beerschoten and Houdringe estates, passing the sights below.

Pavilion Beerschoten
In Information Center Paviljoen Beerschoten, the past, present and future of the Stichtse Lustwarande come to life. You can go to the information center for coffee or tea. Open: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Sundays and public holidays 11am - 4.30pm. During the summer holidays: Friday and Saturday 1.30 pm - 4.30 pm, Sunday 11 am - 4.30 pm. Behind the pavilion is a sculpture garden by Jits Bakker.

Beer Shots
Until 1680, Beerschoten was an uithof (farm) of the Women's Monastery in De Bilt. After sale it has been inhabited by different families. In 1835 the estate was laid out in the English landscape style after a design by landscape architect Zocher jr. Huize Beerschoten was destroyed by fire in 1889 and was subsequently rebuilt in the Neo-Renaissance style. Like the Houdringe estate, Landgoed Beerschoten is part of the Stichtse Lustwarande, a belt of country estates between De Bilt and Rhenen.

Pond
The pond in front of Huize Beerschoten and the stream are important elements of the park forest. From the country house you have a beautiful view over the pond and the winding stream.

Rabbit mountain
This artificial hill is part of the landscape park and is located in the middle of a star-shaped avenue pattern. Five avenues from different directions converge on the Konijnenberg. On top of the knoll is a lime tree.

Goldfish bowl
This depth used to be a fish pond in which fish (carp) were bred for consumption. The bowl was dry for a long time because the groundwater level had dropped. Utrechts Landschap has installed an impermeable layer on the bottom, which now contains water again. The walls are reinforced with steel, so that there is again a beautiful Goldfish bowl.

Tuber garden
This walled vegetable garden used to be part of the Tannenberg country estate. The Knollentuin and the country house Canteclaer are used by the Christophoris foundation, a living and working environment for children with an intellectual disability.

Heyntjeskamp
Heyntjeskamp dates from 1645 and consists largely of spontaneous forest on former shifting sand. We find a varied forest with Scots pines, native oaks, beech and birch. Heyntjeskamp is an important water extraction area for the province of Utrecht.

Water pump station
Drinking water is extracted from the soil here. The groundwater level has dropped considerably as a result. This has caused a lot of problems for the deciduous trees on the Heyntjeskamp. The stream and pond at Beerschoten are filled with rinse water from the pumping station.

avenue
Here you see a nice example of an avenue. Avenues used to determine the structure of the estate and gave status to the area. Most avenues go back to the first construction of the estates and are therefore part of the original park design.

holding rings
Landgoed Houdringe was built around 1629 on the former grounds of the Oostbroek monastery. A farm stood on the site of what is now Huis Houdringe. In 1779 the house was demolished and the country house built. The country house is surrounded by a garden, partly in the English landscape style and partly in the French Baroque style. Very thick trees occur in the western part of Houdringe. The oaks and beeches, which have a diameter of more than 1 meter, are still of the first construction and have now reached an age of approx. 230 years.

Grazing area
This point offers a surprising panorama over the park landscape and Huize Houdringe. Your gaze is drawn to the horizon on your right through the tree groups and forest edges, where Huize Houdringe and the buildings of the De Uithof university complex meet.
The open areas on your left are part of the old cultivated land, which belonged to the country estate of Houdringe. Part of the Utrecht Landscape has been fenced in. There is now an extensive grazing policy. This means that a limited number of head of cattle per hectare is allowed. The grazing area is not fertilized but grazed. As a result, the soil becomes less nutrient-poor and plant species that like poor, poor soil can establish themselves again. Examples are tansy, ragwort and hornflower.
