Who would have ever thought that you would find one of the most species-rich dunes in Europe right next to the world port of Rotterdam?
Quack water
At EuroParcs Resort Poort van Zeeland you are very welcome for a delicious snack and a drink at the brasserie before or after your walking tour. From here you can discover the nature island of Voorne-Putten and the Dunes of Voorne. From the park you first walk into the forest around the Quackjeswater, a dune lake. Thick old oak trees and many plant species grow here. It sometimes seems as if you are walking through a primeval forest here. You probably didn't expect that so close to the sea!
Voornes Dune
The Quackjeswater is part of Voornes Duin, a dune area that is unprecedentedly rich in plant and animal species. Because no drinking water is extracted here, the dunes are very damp. Hence all those dune lakes where numerous birds can be seen. The variety with the beach and views of the sea make this area extra special. The Haringvlietdam marks the boundary between fresh and salt water. This was constructed in 1971 and spans 4.5 kilometers.
