Alphen aan den Rijn, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 767772
Provided by: route.nl
This cycle tour takes you through the beautiful water-rich Groene Hart. It should actually be called the Blue Heart, with all those lakes and rivers!
Unique heritage
This route starts at Van der Valk Avifauna. You cycle through Alphen aan den Rijn and pick up the beautifully winding Oude Rijn with its beautiful dikes and windmills. This way you pass Mill 3, or the Bovenmolen, which dates from 1823. This is part of the only mill corridor still in operation in the world: the Aarlanderveen is not maintained at the correct level from a distance, but by a real gauge miller.
Beautiful Girl
Further on you will see the Dikke Molen, a polder mill from 1674. Along the river De Meije you will see old farms and the almost sixty meter high white water tower from 1932. Everywhere you come across signs of the centuries-long battle against the water: the lock in Woerdense Verlaat originally dates from 1448. You cycle back to your starting point via the Braassemermeer and a number of mills. Pay a visit to the adjacent Avifauna bird park!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
