Walking along the Waal: to the Waalbos

De Waal leads you through a beautiful authentic area just outside Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. Here you will discover special nature reserves such as the Waalbos and Sandelingen-Ambacht.

Waalbos
Before leaving, have a cup of coffee at De Heeren van Ambacht, located in the monumental Bouwlust building from 1813. You can go there every day from 11 am, which is handy! From here you follow the banks of the Waal: a beautiful walk along the water. You will pass the De Kersenboom mill, which was put into use in 1822. You also walk all the way around the Waalbos, which is minimally managed by Staatsbosbeheer. More and more nature activities are taking place.

Sanlingen Craft
The Waal leads from Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht to Barendrecht where the water is connected to the Oude Maas via a pumping station. The typical Walloon atmosphere has been beautifully preserved, despite all the urban development in this region. You walk back into Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht via the Sandelingen-Ambacht nature reserve. Enjoy the panoramic views that characterize the polder from one of the benches. Avenues reveal the plots of old orchards and there are also meadows rich in flowers and herbs.
