Description
- You start this walk in Germany, but it goes through the Dutch nature reserve Witteveen.
- From the parking lot, do not go towards the water mill, but take the path that runs to the west. At the beginning are two gate columns.
- I have limited this walk to the Huurnebulten or the landscape park of Gert Jan Pieter van Heek. This landowner bought the entire Witteveen, but wanted to create a landscape park in the southern part. This plus the northern peat area was to become an area for hunting. Only later did he have other plans that were socially oriented. Prince Hendrik, the consort of a former Queen Wilhelmina, used to hunt here a lot. There was a pheasantry called De Hanebulten in this southern part.
- There are several hornbeams in this part of the Witte Veen, especially in the part north of the bridge over the Buurserbeek. This is a tree species from the birch family and not a row of beeches that together form a hedge. They can be recognized by the reticulated elevations on the bark. You will find them when you have just crossed the Buurserbeek. You will also find an old border post there. There is a letter on both sides. The M of Münsterland, Germany and the O on the Dutch side. Whether it is the O van Overijssel I dare to doubt. I think it stands for the historical name Oversticht.
