Description

Discover Emmeloord, the central place of the Noordoostpolder. Remarkably enough, the first houses here were occupied during the Second World War.

Emmeloord
You walk through a landscape of perfectly straight ditches and parcels of land to Emmeloord, the central point of the Noordoostpolder and the main town of the municipality. From afar you can already see the Poldertoren, a 65-metre high water tower from 1959. In Emmeloord you walk a bit along Eplayervaart, which leads through the countryside to Espel. The town is named after the village of Emmeloord, which was located on the northern tip of the former island of Schokland.

Hannie Schaftweg
During the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder, the working title was'Village A\\\': the first house was moved into on December 15, 1943. Because of the reclamation during the Second World War, the Noordoostpolder was an El Dorado for people in hiding. Many roads in this region are named after resistance fighters from World War II, so you walk a long way along the Hannie Schaftweg.
