Description

The Vecht Valley between Dalfsen and Zwolle is a low-lying, swampy region. Names on the map such as Marshoek and Broekhuizen are telling: both'mars\\\' and'broek\\\' mean'swamp\\\'. In this area, habitation was only possible on the river dunes, which rise from the plain as slightly higher sand ridges (horsts). The villages of Hoonhorst, Lenthe, Wythmen and Herfte are located on it. This river dune landscape was created because the wind took hold of the dried up sandbanks in the primeval river valley of the Vecht during the last ice age.

Dalfsen
The place name Dalfsen was mentioned for the first time in 1234. In the current church (from 1455) there is a grave monument of the Rechteren family, the owners of the castle of the same name. The nearby Westermolen is still in operation. It is remarkable that Dalfsen never received city rights, while other places along the Vecht (Ommen, Hardenberg and Gramsbergen) did. The cause of this is probably the dominant position that the Rechteren house took up early on in this area. In the Middle Ages, city rights gave a city an independent position compared to the landed gentry. This was difficult to tolerate with the position of power of the lords of Judgeen.

Edelmanshuizen
In the late Middle Ages, a belt of noble houses emerged around Dalfsen and Heino, almost all of which acquired the status of manors (the owner of a manor had the right to hold a seat in the government of Overijssel). Of those estates, eight remain: Judgeen, Hessum, Huize Den Berg, Den Aalshorst (with the accompanying park Het Engels Werk, laid out in English landscape style), De Horte, De Mataram, De Leemcule and De Ruitenborg. You will pass, among other things, House De Leemcule, which was first mentioned in 1320. Information about these estates can be found on the ANWB information panel at the town hall of Dalfsen.

Lock and fish ladder
At Broekhuizen you go via the weir to the northern bank towards Dalfsen. Next to the weir, which regulates the water level, is a lock for ships. In addition, there is a fish ladder, along which fish such as trout and ide can swim upstream to spawn.

Route alternative
In case the weir at Broekhuizen is closed, you can alternatively continue driving along the southern bank. You then cycle straight on at junction 44 to junction 58.

Dalfsen
The eslands around the hamlet of Ankum were an attractive location in the Middle Ages, not only for farmers, but also for the Zwolle-oriented Salland nobility who preferred to live as close to the city as possible. The Ankummer Es was the first area outside the IJsselvallei that could be cultivated and built on. Nowadays it is a residential area of Dalfsen.
