Walking along the Maasheggen

Through the floodplains
The starting point of this walk is in Oeffelt, one of the oldest villages in Boxmeer. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Maas and the surrounding landscape. The first part of the route takes you straight through meadows on the floodplains to the banks of the Maas. At Sint Agatha you can take a look at the Kruisheren Monastery. This monastery was founded around the year 1371 by the Crosiers. The monastery is still in use and this makes it the oldest inhabited monastery in the Netherlands.

Time for a break
A little further on you will find another attraction: the Exporum bull. This steel statue of a bull was part of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Then you walk along the edge of the Maas for quite some time. Along the way you can take a break at t Veerhuis for a snack and a drink. You will eventually end your tour in Oeffelt.

A historic landscape
The Maasheggen landscape is well preserved in this region. In many other places the Maasheggen gave way to barbed wire and the small plots turned into large-scale agricultural areas, but that was not the case here. That is what makes the landscape here so unique. It sometimes seems as if you are going back in time as you walk through this historic landscape.
