Walking along the Maasheggen

Through the floodplains
The starting point of this walk is in Oeffelt, one of the oldest villages in Boxmeer. From here you have a beautiful view of the Maas and the surrounding landscape. The first part of the route takes you straight through meadows on the floodplains to the bank of the Maas. At Sint Agatha you can take a look at the Kruisherenklooster. This monastery was founded around the year 1371 by the Kruisheren. The monastery is still in use and is therefore the oldest still inhabited monastery in the Netherlands.

Time for a break
A little further on you will find another attraction: the Exporum bull. This steel statue of a bull was part of the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels. Then you walk along the edge of the Maas for a long time. You end your walk in Oeffelt.

A historical landscape
The Maasheggen landscape has been well preserved in this region. In many other places, the Maas hedges have made way for barbed wire and the small plots have changed into large-scale agricultural areas, but that was not the case here. That is what makes the landscape here so unique. It sometimes feels like you are going back in time when you walk through this historical landscape.
