Counting windmills along the Dutch lakes

The Kagerplassen, the Wijde Aa, and the Westeinder Plassen: you'll find plenty of beautiful Dutch scenery along this watery route. You'll also pass through several charming villages and the Bulb Region. It promises to be a day of pure enjoyment!

Wide Aa
From the picturesque village of Kaag, you can take a boat across the lake. A wonderfully nostalgic trip in beautiful surroundings. In a short time, you'll pass three polder windmills: the 17th-century Vrouw Venne, the Hoogmadese Molen, and the Vlietmolen. Along the cycle path along the Wijde Aa, you can grab a bench to enjoy the view of the meadows and the centuries-old peat stream.

Fort at Kudelstaart
From the road, you look out over the Westeinder Plassen lakes. You'll pass Fort Kudelstaart, and a little further on, you'll see a monumental water tower dating from 1928. Just outside Aalsmeer, you'll pass the small-scale Oosteinderpoel nature reserve, a remnant of the landscape before the land reclamation. Here stands the Zwarte Ruiter (Black Rider), a former corn mill dating from 1778. Through the Haarlemmermeerse Bos (Haarlem Forest) and the adjacent Prins Bernhardbos (Prince Bernhard Forest), you'll enter the colorful Bollenstreek (Bulb Region). Here, you'll still see the Hogeveensemolen (Hoogeveen Mill), dating from 1654.
