From Hauwert, you cycle to De Weelen, a nature reserve where the characteristic medieval reclamation pattern has been preserved. Further on, you'll pass through Enkhuizen, known as Haringstad (Herring City) because of its past as a center of the herring fishing industry. Cycling along the Zuiderdijk, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the Markermeer lake. The route takes you through Oosterleek, where you'll see characteristic farmhouses with traditional Dutch bell-shaped roofs and the beautiful village church dating from 1690. In Wijdenes, you'll pass several monumental 17th-century houses with timber walls. Just past Schellinkhout stands De Grote Molen (The Great Mill), dating from 1638. This polder mill's function was taken over by the adjacent pumping station in 1900. In the heart of Hoorn, you'll also experience plenty of cultural history. Stop for a break to soak up the atmosphere. The route concludes with a delicious meal at Brasserie Cafe De Werf.
