The island of Wieringen - from the forest!

This route starts at the Robbenoordbos, on the edge of the Wieringermeer polder. Via the Den Oeverseweg you drive onto the former island of Wieringen, starting at the Polder Waard-Nieuwland. 

This area was added to what was then the island in 1848. The polder road runs right through this polder, after which the route leads through Oosterland via the Oosterweg. The Michaelskerk is located in the middle of Oosterland, beautifully situated on a plateau. Arriving at the dike, you can catch a glimpse of Villa Nieuwland on the left, one of the villas that were built on Wieringen for the Zuiderzee works. The road continues with a beautiful view of the Wad. Further on, on the Molgerdijk, is the clay pit at Vatrop. Boulder clay was excavated here in the past and used as material for dyke construction. Through Vatrop you continue via the Bierdijkerveldweg towards Stroe, where you will find the Heidense Kapel, a mystical location, and part of the Pilgrim's Route. A little further on is the Wieringer Eiland Museum. 

North of Hippolytushoef, on the corner of Noordburenweg, there is a mini-museum"Allerhande\\\", with a beautiful collection of old tools and wares. You cycle along the north side of Hippolytushoef and the dike towards the westernmost point of Wieringen; the Quarantine. Nowadays a campsite, (sick) sailors used to be disembarked here.
