Description
The extensive moorland around the Nieuwkoopse Plassen is a beautiful cycling area. Centuries-old locks and mills bear witness to a long battle against the water.
Nieuwkoopse Plassen
Today you will discover the Dutch Fens, which are part of the Het Groene Hart National Landscape. In this water-rich lowland you drive past the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, among other things. They form one of the last extensive low peat areas that the Netherlands once had. You will find swamps, but also hay fields, flowery meadows and reed fields.
Woerdense Leave
Along the river De Meije you will see old farms and the almost sixty meter high white water tower from 1932. Everywhere you see signs of the battle against water. The lock in Woerdense Verlaat originally dates from 1448. Further on you will discover the Westveense Molen, a polder mill from 1676. It stands along a literally manually dug part of the Kromme Mijdrecht, one of the rivers used for the drainage of this once swampy raised peat area .
