Description
The Hollandse Venen, a sub-area of the National Landscape Het Groene Hart, excels in peat rivers and lakes. A beautiful route along the water!
Crooked Mijdrecht
You cycle a long way along the beautifully winding Kromme Mijdrecht, through a typical Dutch landscape of ditches and meadows. Then you follow the Amstel. Near Kudelstaart you come across the Westeinderplassen. This area was created by peat extraction, but never drained. A nice place to get off and enjoy the silence along the bank.
Langeraar Lakes
The Fort bij Kudelstaart, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, is also located on the water. This defence line was intended to stop enemy attacks, but in the end the threatening effect of the line was enough to prevent attacks. You continue along lakes and meandering rivers, such as the Drecht and the Langeraarsche Plassen. In this water-rich lowland you can enjoy the wide views and the typical Dutch high skies.
