Description
The Hollandse Venen, a sub-area of the Het Groene Hart National Landscape, excels in peat rivers and ponds. A beautiful route along the water!
Kromme Mijdrecht
You cycle a long way along the beautifully winding Kromme Mijdrecht, through a typical Dutch landscape of ditches and meadows. Then you follow the Amstel. Near Kudelstaart you come across the Westeinderplassen. This area was created by peat extraction, but was never drained. A nice place to take a break and enjoy the silence along the shore.
Langeraarse Plassen
The Fort at Kudelstaart, part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, is also located on the water. This defense line was intended to prevent enemy attacks, but ultimately the threatening effect of the line was sufficient to prevent attacks. You continue past lakes and meandering rivers, such as the Drecht and the Langeraarssche Plassen. In this water-rich lowland you can enjoy the wide views and the typical Dutch high skies.
