Around the Volkerak by bike

You will come across the Volkerak again and again with this beautiful route. The influence of the sea can be seen in the many creeks that you encounter in this region.

Goeree-Overflakkee
You cycle across the rural island of Goeree-Overflakkee to the village of Achthuizen, originally a temporary home for seasonal workers from North Brabant. Many of them continued to live here and formed a Catholic enclave in a predominantly Protestant area. Seen from the air, the village is strikingly shaped like an eight.

Lower shaft
Just before the end of the route you cycle past the lock Benedensas near the church village of De Heen. The lock complex dates from the nineteenth century and has been completely renovated. It was constructed to protect the land behind against high water from the Krammer Volkerak. You can see from the historic buildings that there was a small hamlet here with all kinds of skippers' facilities such as a shop and the skippers' house. Then you cycle back to Dinteloord.
