Nature walk through the Weerribben

Open water, reed beds, swamp forests... The Weerribben is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands!

The Weerribben
The route starts and ends at Restaurant An\\\'t Waeter. If you want to stay close to nature, you can also go to the mini-campsite instead of renting a room. From here you can discover De Weerribben. The wet nature reserve is overgrown with beautiful plants and a variety of special animal species live in this area, such as the reintroduced otter. The carnivorous bladderwort often floats in large masses on the fens. In the reed land you will come across cheerful colours of rough herbs.

The origin
You walk from Wetering via Muggenbeet and the Netherlands back to your starting point. From the twelfth century, dikes were built here so that the influence of the Zuiderzee decreased and the land became suitable for habitation. When it was discovered that dried peat was a good fuel, peat was cut in the Wieden for centuries. In the Weerribben, peat extraction started later and rules were imposed. Therefore, large lakes did not form there.
