Outside the dike walking route
Ready for some peace and quiet? This walking route takes you through Maren-Kessel, classified by NRC Handelsblad as one of the quiet places in the Netherlands. The village is beautifully situated on the Maas and has a rich history dating back to the time of the Celts. Near the Maas in an idyllic street that turns into a walking path. You cannot park at't Hof van Kessel, a little further on the Kesselsedijk there is a parking lot where you can park your car. You immediately walk through the area outside the dike along the Maas: special!
Roman battle
Maren-Kessel also turns out to be the place where Julius Caesar destroyed two Germanic tribes in 55 BC, archaeologists recently discovered. A battle is said to have taken place here, about which Caesar wrote extensively in his De Bello Galico: the earliest known battle on Dutch soil. The Maren Kessel War Memorial shows that more recent battles took place around the village. Fortunately, it is wonderfully peaceful now. Here you can really enjoy the silence!
