Description
Admire monumental buildings
The starting point of this route is at the Krommenie-Assendelft train station. From here you cycle to Westzaan and further to the Assendelver Veenpolder. This deep area was created by peat extraction and the drying of the remaining peat soil. The hamlet of Nauerna is the next place you visit on this route. Here you can admire the former cheese warehouse'Archangel\\\'. You then cycle further to the ribbon villages of Buitenhuizen and Assendelft. Here you will find old-fashioned longhouse farmhouses, historic wooden houses and other monumental buildings. For example, take a look at the former teacher's home and school'Roema Poeti\\\' in Buitenhuizen. The facades of the original school building have been severely damaged, but you can roughly imagine what it once looked like here.
Thousands of years ago, the Zaan region consisted of a rough swamp forest that was not really passable. This area was reclaimed and dikes were built to protect against the water. In the 14th and 15th centuries, more and more people came to live on the dikes along the Zaan. The countless villages in this area were also founded at that time.
