Nowhere else will you find so many may and blackthorn hedges together: a beautiful sight when they bloom! These hedges have served as property boundaries for centuries.
Authentic Maash hedges
Here you are in the middle of the pleasant Boxmeer, which you will get to know better today. In the 13th century, the Count of Gelre lent the village of Mere to Jan Boc de Mere, who lived at the castle. Boc\\\'s Mere became Boxmeer. Near the Maas you will see authentic Maasheggen, a centuries-old cultural heritage.
Boxmeer Castle
Due to human intervention, the hawthorns and blackthorns grow together and form an impenetrable hedge. This weaving of hedges already existed in Roman times: Julius Caesar described his annoyance about it, it took him a lot of effort to pass these green walls with his army. Back in Boxmeer you can rest at your starting point before continuing your walk. Then you walk past Boxmeer Castle, where a museum is located in the former cellar.
