Nowhere else will you find so many hawthorn and blackthorn hedges together: a beautiful sight when they bloom! For centuries, these hedges have served as parcel boundaries.
Authentic Maas hedges
You are here in the middle of the pleasant Boxmeer that you will get to know better today. In the 13th century, the Count of Gelre gave the village of Mere in fief to Jan Boc de Mere, who lived in the castle. Boc\\\'s Mere became Boxmeer. Near the Maas you can see authentic Maasheggen, a centuries-old cultural heritage.
Boxmeer Castle
Due to human intervention, the hawthorns and blackthorns grow together and form an impenetrable hedge. This weaving of hedges already existed in Roman times: Julius Caesar described his annoyance about it, it cost him a lot of effort to pass these green walls with his army. Back in Boxmeer, you can rest for a while at your starting point before you continue walking. Then you walk past the Castle of Boxmeer, where a museum is located in the former cellar.
