Description
The mysterious fens of the Malpie are a picture. With this route you will discover Groot Malpeven, where a major nature restoration project has just taken place.
Mysterious Malpie
You can first have a cup of coffee on the cozy terrace of Het Wapen van Westerhoven, then set off. The neo-Gothic St. Servatius Church from 1855 is located on Dorpsstraat. The adjacent parsonage dates from 1861. Via the hamlet of Loveren you walk to the Malpie, which is known for its beautiful fens. Between the heaths, water wells up from the ground to form mysterious fens, a beautiful sight.
Restored fen
You walk right past the Groot Malpeven, which has recently been renovated. The water was too rich in nutrients and the original plants and animals disappeared. The area around the fen has also been completely opened up to regain the heathland, with everything that comes with it, such as butterflies, dragonflies and birds. Contaminated sludge, which entered the fen by the Dommel, has been removed from the fen: approximately five hundred truck loads!
