Description
It is hard to believe that only a century ago nothing but water flowed on the spot where the Noordoostpolder now lies. Only the ancient island of Schokland proudly rose above the sea.

You will discover the Noordoostpolder, which was constructed in an area that was still sea ten years before it dried up. Even before the Zuiderzee was formed, there was land here where people lived. The former island of Schokland that you cycle past was a last remnant of this ancient land.
Schokland
Schokland was reclaimed to prevent its permanent disappearance. It is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage, it symbolizes Dutch life with the water. In the Schokland Museum you can learn more about the history of this village. Through a landscape of straight ditches and plots you cycle to Emmeloord, the central point of the Noordoostpolder. Via Marknesse and the fruit farms around Kraggenburg you cycle back to your starting point.
