It is unbelievable that just a century ago nothing but water flowed where the Noordoostpolder is now located. Only the ancient island of Schokland stood proudly above the sea here.

You will discover the Noordoostpolder, which was built in an area that was still sea ten years before it fell dry. Even before the Zuiderzee was created, there was land here where people lived. The former island of Schokland, which you cycle past, was the last remnant of this ancient country.
Scotland
Schokland was reclaimed to prevent it from disappearing permanently. It now belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage, it symbolizes Dutch life with water. In the Schokland Museum you can learn more about the history of this village. You drive through a landscape of straight ditches and plots to Emmeloord, the central point of the Noordoostpolder. You cycle back to your starting point via Marknesse and the fruit farms around Kraggenburg.
