Through the dunes: from Egmond to Beverwijk

Your cycle route starts at Bike Shop Egmond. Here you can enjoy beautiful dunes and a picturesque polder area. First you cycle to Egmond Binnen, where you pass the park where the Abbey of Egmond is located. This Sint-Adelbert abbey, founded in the tenth century, is the oldest in the Netherlands. The original building was destroyed by the Beggars in 1573 on the orders of Willem van Oranje. The abbey's possessions were used to pay for the foundation of the university in Leiden. It was not until 1935 that a new abbey was built that still houses a community of monks. Via Beverwijk you cycle to Wijk aan Zee. You drive back through the Egmond dunes. Behind the dune tops it is wonderfully sheltered cycling through a varied open and wooded area.
