Cycling along the peat lakes

Park the car at the tourist office in Warmond, drink a cup of coffee at Brasserie Coazy and cycle along the green and water-rich north side of Leiden towards the picturesque villages of Rijpwetering and Oude Ade. After a while you cycle past two polder mills: the Veendermolen and De Jonge Willem. The latter is only a remnant. Then you cycle north along the Braassemermeer. After cycling through Roelofarendsveen, you will pass Oude Wetering and Nieuwe Wetering. You cycle via Huigsloot to Buitenkaag. In the meantime you cycle straight through the polders, what a wonderful view! Sassenheim originated on the old beach walls, when the coast was further east than it is today. The village church, which is located above street level, is a reminder of the old beach wall.
