Right on the Belgian border, near Bergen op Zoom, you will discover the Stoppelbergen and the Moretusbos. A wonderful area for a walk!
Balthazar Moretus
From junction 1 you enter the Moretusbos. This beautiful park forest was founded from Kasteel Ravenhorst. In the past, the elite hunted here. Balthazar Moretus, a scion of the immensely wealthy Plantijn-Moretus printing family from Antwerp, acquired the domain in 1679. But it was Jonker Johannes-Josephus Moretus, owner since 1758, who had the forest planted.
The Stoppelbergen
On the wild heathland, the poor population created a forest with avenues, sand banks and hills between 1760 and 1780, modelled on the gardens of the French palace of Versailles. You can also walk through De Stoppelbergen. The path in this mixed forest undulates, because it is located on the Brabantse Wal. There are many maritime pines in the area, recognisable by their very long needles, coarse bark and large pine cones. The trees are always crooked!
