Zeewolde, Flevoland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 753253
Provided by: Groots Genieten
With 4,200 hectares, the Horsterwold is not only the most extensive forest in Flevoland, but also the largest contiguous deciduous forest in Western Europe. By bike you can easily visit the Vogelakker, where rare birds can be spotted.
Green wall
Today you will explore in and around the most special forest in Flevoland: the Horsterwold, just outside Zeewolde. Thanks to the fertile seabed on which the polder was constructed, many trees are already so tall that they appear centuries old. Yet they have been there for less than fifty years. With its tall poplars, the Horsterwold looks like a green wall from a distance, but inside you will find forest meadows where deer graze. In addition to poplars, you will see chestnut trees, oaks and cherry trees here.
Pallid harrier
You also pass the Nuldernauw and through Zeewolde. Then you cycle past the Vogelakker, recently constructed as a bird resting place. The endangered Montagu's Harrier and the rare Pallid Harrier have already been spotted there. The area lives up to its name!
