Walking through the Heidestein estate

Discover Landgoed Heidestein and Landgoed Bornia during this walk of over 11 kilometers. Handy, because this walking route starts and ends at a station, namely Station Driebergen-Zeist.

Bornia estate
From Driebergen-Zeist train station you walk through Landgoed Bornia.'Bornia\\' is Old Frisian for'border area\\'. The estate owes its name to its location, on the border between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Kromme Rijn area. Originally the area consisted of many sand drifts, which can still be seen in the striking relief in this area. A little further on you walk past Café & Terrace Beauforthuis. Here you can relax and enjoy a nice snack and drink.

Estate Heidestein
Hidden in the woods near Zeist is Landgoed Groot Heidestein. The Heidestein estate with ponds, bridges, tea house and ice cellar was built around 1906 in a former heath landscape. The route takes you through the varied forest with characteristic pines and remains of the historic estates. The vast moors are impressive.

Walking through moors
This is how empty and wide the entire Utrechtse Heuvelrug looked more than a hundred years ago. Drentse Heideschapen - the oldest breed of sheep in Western Europe - ensure that the heathland remains open. A wooden tea house was built on the ramparts around a pond, which is still intact. You can walk through tunnels around the tea house. The narrow-gauge railway used to run here for visitors to the tea house to take a tour of the estate. The paths and tunnels are a treat for walkers!
