Description

Two of the largest forts of the New Dutch Waterline, castles, beautiful rural roads and a small point of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug: this route is unrivalled!

Forts
First a cup of coffee on the terrace at the orchard of Fruitboerderij and Plattelandwinkel De Achterdijk and then you get on your bike. You will soon pass Fort Vechten, the second largest fort in the New Dutch Waterline. There is also a replica of a Roman watchtower here. Further on you pass Fort Rijnauwen, with 32 hectares the largest fortress in the New Dutch Waterline. The fort was built at the end of the nineteenth century and is now a nature reserve.

Sterkenburg Castle
You will see some country houses that were initially built as castles. Such as Sterkenburg Castle, a knight's court town whose history dates back to the thirteenth century. You will also pass Beverweerd Castle. This building originally dates from the thirteenth century, but the current building dates from 1850. You drive through the fields on a leafy road. Cycling in such a beautiful landscape almost seems to happen automatically, before you know it you are back at your starting point.
