Description

Two of the largest fortresses from the New Dutch Waterline, castles, beautiful rural roads and a small tip of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug: this route is simply endless!

Forts
First a cup of coffee on the terrace at the orchard of Fruitboerderij and Plattelandwinkel De Achterdijk and then you get on your bike. You will soon pass Fort Vechten, the second largest fort in the New Dutch Waterline. Here is also a replica of a Roman watchtower. Further on you pass Fort Rijnauwen, with 32 hectares the largest fortress of the New Dutch Waterline. The fort was built at the end of the nineteenth century and is now a nature reserve.

Castle Sterkenburg
You see some country houses that were initially built as fortresses. Such as Kasteel Sterkenburg, a knight's court town whose history goes back to the thirteenth century. You will also pass Beverweerd Castle. This residence originally dates from the thirteenth century, but the current building dates from 1850. You drive through the countryside on a leafy road. Cycling in such a beautiful landscape seems almost automatic, before you know it you'll be back at your starting point.
