Country house route in the Kromme Rijn region

In the region between Wijk bij Duurstede and Houten you will find many old country houses. For example, you will pass the country house Leeuwenburgh, which originally dates from 1657. You cycle through the polder to Wijk bij Duurstede, enjoying the views. 't Goy is a picturesque hamlet that developed around a former medieval castle. You cross Houten on a leafy cycle path, after which you cycle through the Nieuw Wulven, which was built in 2000. Just past junction 98 you can view a replica of a Roman watchtower. A complete Roman fort once stood here along the Limes, the northern border of the Roman Empire. Via the Fort bij Rijnauwen and Landgoed Niënhof you cycle to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Here you cycle a bit through the woods, before you get off at IJsboerderij Vrederust.
