Round Kamperland

Discover the nature around Kamperland! The Oosterschelde is beautiful, just like the view from the dike over bird-rich and humid areas. Church towers of small villages stand proudly in the flat polder landscape.

Eastern Scheldt
Today you are going for a nice walk in the hinterland of the Oosterschelde. Behind the sea dike are small polders in places where people feared a dike breach. Inland, a reserve dike was then constructed at those places, the inlaagdijk. Originally the soil here consisted of fields and meadows, now of wet marshes or reed beds. From the dike you can see numerous birds, such as waders.

All Saints Flood
Noord-Beveland has been fighting against the water for centuries. The first dikes were built here as early as the eleventh century. However, the infamous All Saints Flood of 1532 destroyed all the polder work in one go: the entire island disappeared under water, only the church towers of Kortgene and Wissenkerke still protruded above the waves. A crazy idea if you now see those towers sticking out above the polder. It took more than sixty years before people dared to reclaim the island.
