Description
The Westland is more than greenhouses: you can discover beautiful medieval towns such as Maassluis and enjoy the view over the water of the Nieuwe Waterweg.
Medieval Maassluis
Maassluis is a nice place to start your route. This medieval town became world famous in the nineteenth century because of a towing company. You will still find the National Towing Museum there. Just outside Maassluis you will pass the Wippersmolen, a polder mill from 1726. Westland is best known for its greenhouse horticulture. The impressive greenhouse complexes give this area the name of Glass City. But you also have surprising nature reserves and an old polder landscape intersected by watercourses.
New Waterway
The Nieuwe Waterweg is a man-made connection between the port of Rotterdam and the North Sea: it was created in 1872. From the dike you have beautiful views over the water, the harbor and the Westland. Back at your starting point, Monsieur Paul, you can enjoy a drink on a terrace in cozy Maassluis. This address started as a croissanterie and grew into a busy lunch café with a terrace boat in the Noordvliet in the summer.
