Spot ships and discover villages in the Westland

A delightful route past charming villages and recreational lakes in the bird-rich Westland polder. From the dike along the Nieuwe Waterweg, you'll have stunning views of the water, the harbor, and the Westland region.

Ancient towns
Your route starts at Monsieur Paul, a brasserie in the historic city center of Maassluis. In medieval Maassluis, you'll see the Wippersmolen, a polder mill dating back to 1726. You'll immediately cycle into another beautiful village: the centuries-old, picturesque reclamation village of Maasland. Here you can admire several beautiful buildings, such as the Oude Kerk (Old Church), originally dating back to the fourteenth century. Museum de Schilpen is also a sight to behold: an eighty-year-old grocery store in its original state.

Recreational lakes
Cycle through the polders to Schipluiden, a charming village with beautiful buildings. The village church dates from the seventeenth century. A little later, you'll pass the Wollebrand, which is partly used as a recreational lake but also serves as a natural water reservoir. Like the Kraaiennest, it's a peaceful nature and recreation area. Along the Nieuwe Waterweg, you'll cycle back to Maassluis. This connection between the port of Rotterdam and the North Sea was constructed in 1872. What a sight!
