It is wonderful to cycle over the dikes of West Friesland. All around you you see ditches, canals and bridges. Get off the bus to look around in Medemblik and visit the Dutch Steam Engine Museum!
Steam pumping station
Your cycling day starts with a cup of coffee at Hotel Café Restaurant de Vooroever. Nearby you will immediately find the first attraction: The Dutch Steam Engine Museum. It is located in the former pumping station 'Vier Noorder Koggen', from 1869. It gives a good idea of how people achieved things over 100 years ago that we now do with electricity. A little later you cycle through historic Medemblik, the oldest town in West Friesland.
Whalers
Medemblik received city rights from Count Floris V in 1289 and grew into a prosperous port city. You can still see this rich history in the many beautiful facades. You continue along the IJsselmeer and then dive into the polder. One of the old villages on your route is Aartswoud, which is located just inside the Frisian Omringdijk. This village was once located on the Zuiderzee. Many whalers departed from the former port!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
