Habay is a beautiful region in the Ardennes. You will discover numerous sights, from a Gallo-Roman villa to a castle with ponds and an information center.
Mageroy Villa
The route starts at the Gallo-Roman Villa of Mageroy, a vast agricultural complex that was in use from the 1st to the 4th century BC. It is an important site for Gallo-Roman archeology in Belgium with a huge fish basin, the largest currently known in northern Gaul. Every summer, excavations are organized on this site which is still full of places yet to be discovered. Visitors can help!
Ponds
The villa is located on the Magerois plateau. That name recalls the existence of ancient settlements: the Latin Maceriae means ruins. From here you walk through old and new Habay, past the castle of the Trapperie (private domain) with its ponds, the dike and the water reservoir of the Forges. At the Maison de la Pêche, on the pond of Bologna in Habay-la-Neuve, you can learn all about fish and the ecology of the aquatic world.
