Hiking route Sallandse Heuvelrug and Outdoor Center

Enjoy the beautiful views over the Sallandse Heuvelrug! This route also visits Nijverdal and the Buitencentrum, so there are plenty of opportunities to take a rest along the way.

After a cup of coffee at Restaurant De Sallandse Berg you set off. Today's tour is a junction route, which is useful: getting lost is a thing of the past. You first walk along and through Nijverdal, the only place in the Netherlands where gold has ever been mined. An official concession has even been issued for it! You will also discover the Gagelmansveentje in the Duivecate estate in Nijverdal, previously used as an ice skating rink for many years.

The walk also takes you past the Sallandse Heuvelrug Outdoor Center, a visitor center where you can learn everything about this special area. The views over the beautiful rolling landscape are almost un-Dutch. One of the two remaining groups of grouse in the Netherlands still lives in this nature reserve. According to legend, the Salland hills were created by a giant who carried a bag of sand with him. There would have been a hole in the bag through which the sand leaked!
