Description
Beautiful heathlands, a flock of sheep with a shepherd: this is also the Veluwe. Discover the Elspeetse Heide with this route! Your route starts at Landgoedhotel Villa Vennendal on the edge of the Veluwe. Enjoy a cup of coffee here before you get on your bike. The Veluwe is more than a forest: on the Elspeetse Heide you will soon have beautiful views of the heathland from your bike. The former oak and birch forest disappeared due to logging, after which farmers allowed sheep to graze on the felled part. Because the sheep kept things open, the heath could grow. Also nice to see during this cycle tour is Schaapskooi Elspeet, at junction 89. The Elspeet heath is one of the few heathlands that are still maintained by grazing. The shepherd walks around with the sheep every day, you might even meet him!
