Description
Gruitrode is a pleasant village in Belgian Limburg. In the countryside you can enjoy the vast forests and natural beauty of the Itterdal for hours. And cycling on the historic Geuzenbaan.
Gruitroderbos
The route starts at Toerisme Meeuwen-Gruitrode, where you can learn more about this beautiful region. In the village you will see a few chapels, and you will also pass the centuries-old St. Gertrude Church: a late Gothic cruciform basilica built from marl stone. A little further on you enter the extensive Gruitroderbos, which is part of the De Duinenbanden nature reserve. How wonderfully quiet it is here! Take a deep breath and smell the fresh pine scent!
Itterdal
From junction 526 you drive on the historic Geuzenbaan that runs through the Gruitroderbos. This lane owes its name to the retreat of William of Orange after the Battle of Geldenaken in 1568. With their route, the Beggars wanted to avoid the knights of the Teutonic Order in Gruitrode, because they were not well disposed to Van Oranje. On the Itterbeek you pass the Kasteelmolen and the Rooiermolen. What beautiful places!
