In Roman times, a road ran along the eastern bank of the Maas between Cuijk and Boxmeer: the Via Valentiana. The Romans have left their traces here in several places.

Roman objects
In Groeningen you can immediately view the choir of the beautiful Anthony and Nicholas Chapel, which dates from the fifteenth century. Also nice is the small Museum from Stamp to Tank, with local finds from the Second World War but also Roman objects (by appointment only).

River dune
Just east of the village there was probably a road in Roman times, the Via Valentiana. A little further on you walk through the Groeningse Bergen, a river dune that runs parallel to the Maas and protrudes above the water during floods. There were already houses here in Roman times, of which roof tiles and floor tiles have been found. You walk back to Vierlingsbeek along the edge of the village of Den Bosch (not to be confused with the city of the same name!).
