Tour of Vrachelse Heide

The Vrachelse Heide is a beautiful nature reserve with many coniferous forests, surrounded by beautiful old farms. Explore this green gem with this beautiful walking route, which also leads you past special discoveries such as a hermit tree and an ash village.

Vrachelen neighborhood
This walking route starts at Camping Vrachelen, where you can set off well-rested after an overnight stay. The campsite is named after the hamlet of Vrachelen. Here along the road is the Sacred Oak: a striking pedunculate oak that was planted around 1750. According to tradition, a hermit lived in the hollowed-out tree trunk. A little later you pass through Den Hout, an atypical esdorp. This is also where the De Hoop flour mill is located, which was heavily damaged during the Second World War but is now grinding again.

Vrachelse Heide
You walk through the rural countryside to the Markkanaal. When you cross, you continue walking to the Vrachelse Heide. Although the name suggests otherwise, this nature reserve mainly consists of coniferous forests. It is a wonderfully peaceful walk here, a great opportunity to recharge your battery. At the edge of the woods you pass some characteristic Kempen long-facade farms with Flemish barns. You also walk a bit along the Houtse Meer, a popular recreational area with a beach.
