The dunes, the beach, the bulb fields and the old city of Alkmaar: this route has plenty of variety to offer. Plan a lot of time for it so that you enjoy it to the fullest.

North Holland Dune Reserve
The route starts in Egmond aan den Hoef. You soon cycle into the North Holland Dune Reserve. The enormous variety of plant and animal species makes the reserve a rarity in Europe. A wonderful area to completely clear your head and fill up on energy. In Bergen aan Zee you can get off at De Duinerij. Grab a cozy terrace here and enjoy something tasty and the fresh sea air.

Egmond Castle
Besides cheese, Alkmaar is also a city of windmills. You pass the Geestmolen, a polder mill from 1565. In the old city center you will see plenty of beautiful buildings and Piet's Mill, a corn mill from 1769. Cranenbroek is a bell-shaped farm from 1755. After you emerge from the Heilooer forest, you will soon see the Varnebroeker , a polder mill from 1860. The idyllic surroundings of Egmond Castle are a nice bonus at the end of your route.

In the middle of Alkmaar you will find the Molen van Piet. This tower mill was built in 1769 and from then on the mill served as a flour mill for centuries. Since 1993 that function has been discontinued. Now the blades only turn 'for the prince'. From a formal point of view, the name of this mill is 'De Groot', but the windmill is never actually referred to as such. The name 'Molen van Piet' refers to Cornelis Piet, a miller who had the lower floors of the mill converted into a house in 1884.
