A round of Schoorlse Duinen

The Schoorlse Duinen is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. Get on your bike and come and discover it for yourself. In the vicinity of this dune area you drive through the vast Dutch polders.

Harger mill
The route starts with a terrace at De Duinerij in Bergen aan Zee. Bergen aan Zee used to not be a village at first, but consisted of a few houses and farms in the dunes. The first cafe was opened in 1905! Bergen aan Zee has been around for more than 100 years and it is still very popular among tourists. Enjoy the wonderful surroundings here!

From here you can drive straight into the Schoorlse Duinen, the widest dune area in the Netherlands. A century ago there was still one large sandpit here. Now you see open sand dunes, wet plains, dense forests and heaths. Further on you drive a bit along the Hondsbossche Zeewering. Get a breath of fresh air by the sea! The Harger mill dates from 1804. Its predecessor was killed in 1799 during fighting between an Anglo-Russian army and the French occupiers.

Raft bridge
In Burgervlotbrug you can see one of the five remaining raft bridges in the Netherlands. In the polders it is nice to make kilometers along the canal. After a while you drive through Geestmerambacht, a recreational area of meadows and bushes. Artists' village of Bergen is the last town on your route. And certainly not the least, how beautiful it is here with all those stately old villas!
