A tour of the Schoorlse Duinen

The Schoorlse Duinen is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. Get on your bike and come and discover it for yourself. In the vicinity of this dune area you drive through the extensive Dutch polders.

Hargermolen
The route starts with a terrace at De Duinerij in Bergen aan Zee. Bergen aan Zee was previously not a village, but consisted of a few houses and farms in the dunes. The first cafe was opened in 1905! Bergen aan Zee has been around for more than 100 years and is still very popular among tourists. Enjoy the wonderful surroundings here!

From here you drive straight into the Schoorlse Duinen, the widest dune area in the Netherlands. A century ago there was still one large sandbox here. Now you see open drifting dunes, wet plains, dense forests and heathlands. Further on you drive a bit along the Hondsbossche Zeewering. Get a breath of fresh air by the sea! The Hargermolen dates from 1804. Its predecessor died in 1799 during combat between an Anglo-Russian army and the French occupiers.

Raft bridge
In Burgervlotbrug you see one of the five remaining raft bridges in the Netherlands. In the polders it is nice to travel for miles along the canal. After a while you drive through Geestmerambacht, a recreational area of meadows and bushes. Artists' Village Bergen is the last town on your route. And certainly not least, how beautiful it is here with all those stately old villas!
